Begomovirus capsicumyunnanense is a plant pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a serious viral disease that specifically impacts solanaceous crops. The virus is characterized by a bipartite or monopartite genome consisting of single-stranded DNA and relies on whiteflies for transmission.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Capsicum genus, including bell peppers and hot chili peppers. The virus is widely distributed in regions where whitefly populations are abundant. It can survive in various weed species that act as reservoirs, ensuring the persistence of the pathogen in the environment throughout the growing season.
Typical symptoms include severe leaf curling, stunting of the plant, and significant yellowing or mosaic patterns on the leaves. The infection leads to shortened internodes, which gives the plant a bushy appearance. Fruit production is severely impacted, resulting in small, malformed fruits that are not suitable for the market.
