Pepper leaf curl virus (Begomovirus capsivellanadense) is a significant viral pathogen affecting solanaceous crops. As a member of the Begomovirus genus, it causes severe systemic infections that can lead to total loss of commercial yield if management practices are not implemented in a timely manner.
The primary host for this virus is the pepper plant (Capsicum species), but it is known to affect a variety of other plants within the Solanaceae family. The virus relies entirely on insect vectors for transmission, meaning its spread is seasonal and climate-dependent, following the life cycle of its specific carriers.
Symptoms are distinct and often cause significant stress to the plant. Infected peppers exhibit dramatic leaf curling, puckering, and severe chlorosis. Because the virus disrupts normal physiological processes, plants become stunted, exhibit reduced fruit set, and the fruits that do develop are often distorted or unmarketable.
The development and transmission of the virus are facilitated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. This insect vector acquires the virus while feeding on infected tissue and transmits it to healthy plants. Warm, humid conditions are ideal for the build-up of whitefly populations, leading to rapid disease transmission throughout a field or greenhouse.
Control measures must focus primarily on vector management to break the disease cycle. Recommended strategies include:
- Regular monitoring of whitefly populations using yellow sticky traps.
- Application of systemic and contact insecticides labeled for whitefly control.
- Removal and destruction of symptomatic plants to reduce the reservoir of the virus.
- Implementing strict weed control to remove alternate hosts from the field perimeter.
