Description
The causative agent of the disease is a virus belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the family Geminiviridae. These viruses are characterized by their single-stranded DNA genomes and are typically transmitted by insect vectors in a persistent circulative manner. The virus disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, leading to significant physiological decline.
The primary host for this pathogen is papaya (Carica papaya). While primarily affecting this crop, the virus can persist in various weed hosts, creating a continuous reservoir for infection in tropical and subtropical regions. The impact on papaya production is severe, often resulting in complete crop failure in heavily infested areas.
Symptoms are most visible at the terminal shoots of the plant, where leaves show distinct curling, crinkling, and distortion. Chlorosis or yellowing of the leaf margins is common, and the entire plant typically exhibits stunted growth due to shortened internodes. As the disease progresses, the plant loses its ability to produce fruit, significantly affecting the yield.
Transmission is facilitated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected plant sap and transmits it to healthy plants. The spread is favored by warm weather and dry conditions, which promote the rapid population growth of whiteflies, making the management of the insect vector the primary key to disease control.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:

- Rouging and destroying symptomatic plants to eliminate the source of the virus.
