Papaya begomovirus (Begomovirus caricaguandongense) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It causes severe systemic infections in specific tropical plants, primarily impacting the plant's ability to photosynthesize and develop normally by interfering with its metabolic processes.

The primary host for this virus is papaya (Carica papaya). Infection leads to significant physiological stress in the plant, resulting in stunted growth and a considerable decline in fruit yield and quality, which poses a significant economic challenge to commercial fruit growers.

Symptoms of the disease are typically manifested as mosaic patterns on foliage, leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and significant structural deformity of leaves. In advanced stages of infection, plants may exhibit dwarfism, and the produced fruits often remain underdeveloped or become distorted.

The transmission of this virus is strictly insect-mediated. The sweetpotato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) acts as the primary vector, acquiring the virus from infected plants and transmitting it to healthy ones while feeding. Rapid colonization of crops by whiteflies can lead to quick and widespread outbreaks within a plantation.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate the virus impact and control the vector populations:

  • Implementation of strict phytosanitary practices, including the removal and destruction of symptomatic plants.
  • Consistent monitoring and management of whitefly populations using recommended insecticides.
  • Utilization of virus-free planting stock and potentially resistant or tolerant papaya cultivars.
  • Application of protective nets for greenhouses and nurseries to prevent whitefly entry.
