The causative agent of this disease is the Begomovirus, a genus of viruses that specifically targets Catharanthus roseus and related plant species. As a plant virus with a single-stranded DNA genome, it causes systemic infection that spreads throughout the plant's vascular tissues, disrupting regular growth patterns.
The hosts for this pathogen include various ornamental plants and certain crops. In many agricultural regions, wild-growing weeds serve as long-term reservoirs for the virus, ensuring that the pathogen persists in the environment even when susceptible crop species are not present during certain seasons.
Symptoms of the infection are typically severe and include distinct leaf mosaic patterns, yellowing (chlorosis), leaf curling, and severe stunting of the plant architecture. Because the virus interferes with plant development at a cellular level, infected plants often fail to produce viable flowers, significantly impacting their ornamental value.
The spread of this virus is primarily mediated by insect vectors, most notably the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).
