Chayote mosaic begomovirus is a viral plant pathogen classified within the genus Begomovirus and the family Geminiviridae. This virus possesses a single-stranded DNA genome and induces systemic infection in host plants, significantly impairing their physiological processes and overall development by targeting vascular tissues.
The primary host for this virus is the chayote (Sechium edule), a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. However, the virus can also affect other cucurbit species, leading to severe agricultural consequences. It is especially damaging when infection occurs early in the growth stage, as it drastically reduces the plant's ability to produce viable fruits.
Symptoms of the infection are quite distinctive, primarily manifesting as a mosaic pattern on the leaves, which includes chlorotic spots, streaks, and leaf curling. Affected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and visible deformation of fruits, rendering them unmarketable. The structural integrity of the plant is compromised, leading to premature senescence.
The spread of the virus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, most notably the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The whitefly acquires the virus by feeding on the phloem of infected plants and subsequently transmits it to healthy plants during further feeding. Favorable environmental conditions, such as high temperatures and humidity, accelerate the life cycle of the vector, leading to rapid disease outbreaks.
Managing Chayote mosaic begomovirus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach centered on vector control. Effective measures include:
- Rigorous monitoring for whitefly populations and immediate chemical intervention.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of symptomatic plants to reduce the inoculum source.
- Weed management to eliminate alternative hosts for both the virus and the whitefly.
- Implementation of physical barriers or protected culture environments where feasible.
- Crop rotation and avoiding planting successive generations of cucurbits in the same area.
