Chenopodium begomovirus is a plant pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. The pathogen is a single-stranded DNA virus that primarily infects species within the Amaranthaceae family, specifically targeting plants in the Chenopodium genus. The disease spreads through biological vectors, mainly whiteflies.
The host range is centered on weeds like lamb's quarters (Chenopodium album), but the virus poses a significant threat to cultivated relatives, such as spinach and various beet species. These weeds act as a perennial reservoir for the virus, ensuring its survival between growing seasons even in the absence of crop hosts.
Infected plants typically display symptoms such as leaf mosaic patterns, yellowing (chlorosis), and significant leaf deformation. Affected leaves may curl, and the overall plant vigor is reduced, leading to stunted growth. This physiological impairment directly impacts the crop's yield potential and quality at harvest time.
Disease progression is strictly correlated with the population dynamics of the whitefly vector, particularly Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired when the insect feeds on an infected host and is subsequently transmitted to healthy plants. Outbreaks are most common in hot, dry climates that favor the rapid reproduction and migration of whitefly populations.
Management and prevention require an integrated strategy focused on breaking the disease cycle:
