Description
The causative agent of this disease is the Clerodendrum chinense virus, which belongs to the genus Begomovirus. This pathogen is a single-stranded DNA virus that induces systemic viral mosaic disease in host plants. It primarily affects the metabolism and cellular structure of the host, leading to reduced vigour and physiological decline.
The host range is primarily restricted to species within the Clerodendrum genus. The virus is particularly problematic in tropical and subtropical regions, as well as in greenhouse conditions where the environment is conducive to the proliferation of vectors. Infected plants become reservoirs for the virus, threatening entire collections if not managed properly.
Symptoms typically present as chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns, and vein clearing on the leaves. Severe infections lead to leaf distortion, dwarfing, and stunted growth of the entire plant. Because the virus interferes with photosynthesis and nutrient transport, the overall aesthetic quality and ornamental value of the plant are significantly compromised.
The development and transmission of the virus are heavily reliant on insect vectors, most notably whiteflies (Aleyrodidae). The whitefly acquires the virus during feeding and transmits it to healthy plants. Outbreaks are most common during periods of high temperature and humidity, which favor the rapid reproduction and movement of these insect vectors.
Effective management focuses on prevention, as there is no cure for viral infections once systemic. Growers should utilize virus-free propagation material and implement rigorous whitefly control programs using integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Any symptomatic plants must be immediately isolated or destroyed to limit the spread of the pathogen within the greenhouse or garden setting.
