Description
Coccinia begomovirus is a viral pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus, which causes severe diseases in various plant species. As a geminivirus, it relies on complex interactions with the host plant's vascular tissue to replicate. This disease has become a significant constraint in the cultivation of specific tropical cucurbits.
The primary host for this virus is the ivy gourd (Coccinia grandis). However, the pathogen can also infect various other plants within the Cucurbitaceae family. These plants act as long-term reservoirs for the virus, maintaining the pathogen cycle even when primary crops are not present in the fields.
Symptoms of the infection manifest primarily as foliar mosaic patterns, yellowing, and severe leaf curling. Infected plants show stunted growth, reduced internode length, and a general decline in vigor. As the virus interferes with nutrient translocation, fruit development is significantly impaired, resulting in small, misshapen produce that lacks market value.
Transmission occurs primarily through the tobacco whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmits it to healthy plants during subsequent feedings. The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the environmental conditions that favor the rapid proliferation of whitefly populations, especially during dry and hot seasons.
Management of the virus relies heavily on vector control. Effective strategies include:
- Regular monitoring of whitefly populations using yellow sticky traps.
- Timely application of systemic insecticides.
- Removal of weeds and infected crop debris to break the cycle.
- Implementation of strict phytosanitary measures in greenhouses.
Since no direct cure for established viral infections exists, the focus of agronomic management must remain on prevention. By integrating vector suppression, habitat management, and the use of resistant germplasm, farmers can minimize the impact of the disease on total yield and economic stability.
