Jute mosaic is a significant viral disease caused by the Begomovirus corchomusivi, which belongs to the Geminiviridae family. This pathogen disrupts the metabolic processes of the host plant, leading to stunted development and poor fiber quality, which are critical issues for commercial jute production.

The primary hosts for this virus are species of the genus Corchorus, commonly known as jute. The disease is widespread in tropical climates, causing severe damage to crops and reducing the economic return for farmers who rely on high-yield fiber harvesting.

The typical symptoms of infection include chlorotic mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf curling, and severe dwarfing of the entire plant. In many cases, the reduction in leaf area limits photosynthesis, which directly leads to thin and weak stems, significantly lowering the commercial value of the produced fiber.

The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. These insects act as vectors, acquiring the virus from infected plants and transmitting it to healthy ones. High temperature and humidity levels accelerate the life cycle of the whitefly, thereby increasing the prevalence of the disease.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes the use of virus-free seeds and resistant cultivars. Furthermore, timely chemical control of the whitefly population and the systematic removal of infected plants from the field are essential to prevent the spread of the virus throughout the plantation.
