The causal agent of this disease is Begomovirus corchovenae, a member of the Geminiviridae family. As a typical begomovirus, it is characterized by its transmission mechanism, where it is vectored by whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent, circulative, and non-propagative manner. The virus causes systemic infection, hijacking the host plant's replication machinery to produce viral proteins.
The primary host for this virus is jute (Corchorus spp.), an essential crop grown for its fiber. The disease is highly specific to the Corchorus genus. By inducing physiological stress in the plant, the virus disrupts the development of tissues required for strong and high-quality fiber formation, posing a significant threat to global fiber production regions.
