Description
Cucumber leaf curl virus (Begomovirus cucumismusivi) is a significant viral pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus. This virus causes systemic infections in host plants, leading to severe physiological disruptions that hinder proper nutrient transport and energy production, ultimately resulting in significant yield reduction.
The primary host range of this virus includes various members of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as cucumbers, melons, and squashes. The virus is particularly aggressive in greenhouse environments where high temperatures and uncontrolled pest populations create ideal conditions for its rapid transmission and persistence throughout the growing season.
Visible symptoms of infection typically manifest as upward curling of the leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and a distinct crinkled texture of the foliage. Plants affected by the virus often exhibit severe stunting and stunted internodes. The fruit set is significantly reduced, and those that do develop often show abnormalities in size and shape, rendering them unmarketable.
Transmission occurs primarily through the activity of the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmits it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. Given that the virus is persistent in the insect vector, even a few whiteflies can cause a major outbreak within a crop if not addressed immediately.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach centered on vector control. It is essential to exclude whiteflies using insect-proof netting, monitor populations with yellow sticky traps, and apply selective insecticides when necessary. Destroying infected plant material promptly is also critical to eliminate the viral reservoir and break the transmission cycle.
