These viruses are characterized by their small, circular, single-stranded DNA genomes and are typically transmitted by insect vectors. As a systemic disease, it colonizes the host's phloem, causing significant disruption to the plant's physiological functions and overall development.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are members of the Cucurbitaceae family, including pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers, and melons. The virus is particularly problematic in tropical and subtropical regions, where host plants are available year-round and the vector populations remain high, creating constant pressure on agricultural fields and greenhouse operations.
The main vector responsible for the dissemination of this virus is the sweetpotato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). This insect acts as a persistent vector, meaning once it ingests the virus, it remains infectious for the remainder of its life. Because the virus circulates within the whitefly's body before being injected into a new plant, the efficiency of transmission is remarkably high, especially during hot, dry weather conditions.
