The causal agent of this disease is the virus known as Begomovirus cucurbitapeponis (Squash leaf curl virus), belonging to the family Geminiviridae. This is a viral pathogen that spreads primarily through a vector. The whitefly Bemisia tabaci serves as the main carrier, acquiring the virus while feeding on infected plant sap and transmitting it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions.
The host range is largely restricted to members of the Cucurbitaceae family. Major affected crops include squash, zucchini, cucumber, melon, and watermelon. The virus poses a significant threat to these crops worldwide, particularly in warm regions where the vector population can remain active throughout the growing season.
