Pathogen and Disease Type. Begomovirus cucurbitayunnanense is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a single-stranded DNA virus that causes systemic infection in host plants. This pathogen is responsible for severe crop losses worldwide and is primarily transmitted via insect vectors in a persistent circulative manner.

Susceptible Crops. The virus primarily targets plants within the Cucurbitaceae family. Major affected crops include cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, melons, and gourds. While it thrives in agricultural settings, various weeds in the cucurbit family can serve as alternative hosts, maintaining the viral presence in the environment throughout the growing season.

Symptoms and Signs. The primary visual symptoms include the curling and crinkling of leaves, severe mosaic patterns, and interveinal yellowing. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth with shortened internodes, creating a bushy, rosette appearance. Reproductive growth is severely affected, leading to flower abortion and the development of malformed, discolored, and unmarketable fruits.

High temperatures, lack of rainfall, and dense crop planting create ideal conditions for whitefly outbreaks, leading to rapid viral dissemination.
