Duranta begomovirus (Begomovirus durantae) is a viral disease caused by a member of the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by a single-stranded DNA genome and are primarily restricted to the phloem tissue of the host plant. It specifically affects Duranta species, leading to severe physiological disruptions that impact plant development and aesthetic value.

The transmission of this virus is exclusively dependent on insect vectors, primarily the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired by the insect while feeding on the phloem sap of an infected plant. Once the whitefly is infected, it can transmit the virus to healthy plants throughout its lifespan. The efficiency of this transmission makes the management of the insect vector the cornerstone of any disease control strategy.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as profound leaf curling, severe yellowing or mosaic patterns, and overall stunted growth. Infected plants show a decrease in internode length, creating a dense, rosette-like appearance. As the virus progresses, the ability of the plant to produce flowers is significantly reduced, leading to premature drop and a general decline in the plant's vigor.

Environmental conditions that favor high whitefly populations, such as warm temperatures and high humidity, are critical for the rapid spread of the disease. In greenhouse environments, the close proximity of plants facilitates the movement of vectors, leading to localized outbreaks. Without intervention, a single infected plant can become a reservoir for the virus, threatening the entire crop.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical practices:

  • Immediate rogueing and destruction of symptomatic plants to reduce the viral inoculum.
  • Strict monitoring and control of whitefly populations using targeted insecticides and biological control agents.
