These viruses are characterized by a circular, single-stranded DNA genome and are notorious for their ability to cause severe economic losses in various botanical species, particularly those within the Asteraceae family.

The primary host for this virus is Erechtites hieracifolius, although the pathogen's ability to persist in diverse weed populations makes it a persistent threat in agricultural environments. The virus integrates into the plant's metabolic system, effectively redirecting resources for its own replication, which compromises the overall health of the host.

Symptomatology of Begomovirus erectitesis is distinct and systemic. Growers should monitor crops for the following clinical signs:

  • Severe leaf curling and crinkling that distorts normal foliage development.
  • Mosaic patterning and interveinal chlorosis (yellowing) on younger leaves.
