Begomovirus eupatorii is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. As a member of the genus Begomovirus, it is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. The virus infects plants by disrupting normal physiological processes, leading to significant physiological stress and reduced overall plant vitality.

The host range for this pathogen primarily includes members of the Asteraceae family, particularly the Eupatorium genus. The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner by the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Once a whitefly acquires the virus from an infected host, it retains the ability to transmit it for the remainder of its life cycle.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as leaf yellowing (chlorosis), interveinal mosaic patterns, leaf curling, and severe stunting. In advanced stages of infection, plants may exhibit reduced flowering and poor fruit or seed set. The severity of the disease is often proportional to the timing of the infection; early-season infections generally lead to greater yield losses than late-season ones.

The disease spread is heavily dependent on environmental conditions that favor whitefly population growth. Warm temperatures and high humidity promote rapid insect reproduction and movement within and between fields. Poor sanitation practices, such as allowing weed hosts to remain in or near crop fields, significantly increase the risk of disease outbreaks.

Effective disease management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on minimizing vector exposure. Key practices include:

  • Applying systemic insecticides to control whitefly populations.
  • Removing weed hosts that serve as primary reservoirs for the virus.
  • Using reflective mulches to deter whitefly landing.
  • Implementing strict scouting protocols to detect early signs of infestation.
