Description
The causative agent of this disease is the Begomovirus euphorbiamusiviflavi, a member of the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a DNA virus characterized by its complex interaction with host plant cellular mechanisms, causing chronic systemic infections.
The primary host range includes species within the Euphorbia genus. The virus causes significant economic losses in the horticultural industry, particularly affecting ornamental plants, by reducing their vegetative vigor and marketability. It can persist in latent forms, acting as an inoculum source.
Symptoms of infection are highly distinct and include classic mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and curling or distortion of leaf margins. In severe cases, the entire plant structure may become stunted, with shortened internodes and diminished flower production.
Transmission occurs predominantly through the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), which acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmits it to healthy tissues. Environmental conditions such as warm temperatures and high humidity significantly enhance whitefly population dynamics, thereby increasing infection rates.
