Description
Soybean golden mosaic virus (Begomovirus glycinis) is a destructive plant pathogen within the Geminiviridae family. As a systemic virus, it invades the vascular tissues of the host, leading to physiological disturbances that severely impede the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and store energy.
The primary host for this virus is soybean (Glycine max). The economic impact is most profound in tropical and subtropical agriculture where environmental conditions favor the rapid proliferation of its insect vectors, leading to significant yield losses in affected soybean plantations.
The characteristic symptoms of this disease include severe chlorosis in the form of golden-yellow mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and malformation, which results in poor pod development and, in many cases, total failure of the plant to produce a viable yield.
Transmission occurs exclusively through the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). This insect acts as a biological vector, acquiring the virus while feeding on infected plant sap. Once acquired, the virus can be transmitted to healthy plants throughout the lifespan of the insect, making management extremely difficult.
Integrated management strategies for controlling this virus are as follows:
- Selection of resistant or tolerant soybean cultivars.
- Aggressive management of whitefly populations using targeted insecticides and biological controls.
- Removal and destruction of crop debris and host weeds that act as virus reservoirs.
- Regular field monitoring to detect early infection symptoms and implement containment measures.
