Cotton leaf curl virus (Begomovirus gossypibarasatense) is a member of the Geminiviridae family. It is a significant plant pathogen characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. This virus causes systemic infections, leading to profound developmental anomalies in susceptible plant species, primarily within the Malvaceae family.

Cotton plants (Gossypium spp.) are the primary hosts for this pathogen. The virus causes substantial economic losses globally by affecting fiber quality and yield capacity. The disease is particularly prevalent in warm climates where environmental conditions allow for continuous crop growth and high insect activity.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as upward or downward curling of leaf margins, yellowing of leaf veins, and the development of cup-shaped enations on the underside of leaves. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, reduced leaf area, and impaired fruit development, which leads to a significant decrease in the number of harvestable cotton bolls.

The transmission of this virus is exclusively biological, mediated by the whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on the phloem sap of an infected plant and transmits it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. The spread is facilitated by high population densities of the vector and favorable climatic conditions that support the insect's life cycle.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for the effective control of this virus. Strategies include the cultivation of resistant or tolerant cotton varieties, systematic application of insecticides to reduce vector populations, and the removal of alternative weed hosts that serve as reservoirs. Sanitation practices, such as the destruction of crop residues after harvest, are essential to minimize the inoculum pressure for the next season.
