Description

The causative agent of the disease is Begomovirus gossypiflavi, part of the Geminiviridae family. It is a DNA virus that disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to stunted growth and impaired photosynthetic capability. The virus utilizes the plant's internal machinery to replicate, effectively draining energy from the host.

The primary host for this pathogen is the cotton plant (Gossypium spp.). However, the host range extends to various wild weed species within the Malvaceae family, which act as alternative hosts that maintain the viral reservoir throughout the off-season, allowing the cycle of infection to persist in agricultural areas.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as upward or downward leaf curling, thickening of the veins (vein darkening), and sometimes the development of cup-shaped enations on the leaf undersides. Severe infections lead to reduced plant height, failure to develop flowering buds, and low-quality fiber production, causing major economic losses for producers.

Transmission occurs exclusively through the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), which acts as the viral vector. The whitefly acquires the virus by feeding on infected plants and transmits it to healthy ones. The environmental conditions favoring the disease include warm temperatures and high humidity, which promote rapid population growth of the insect vector.
