Begomovirus gossypikokranense is a viral plant disease characterized by severe leaf curling and stunting. It belongs to the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. The virus relies on the host's cellular machinery to replicate, causing significant physiological disruption and impairment of the plant's vascular transport systems.
The primary host for this virus is cotton (Gossypium species). It is a major limiting factor for cotton production in various agricultural zones worldwide. While cotton is the main commercial target, the virus can maintain itself within various weeds and wild plants belonging to the Malvaceae family, which serve as environmental reservoirs for the infection.
The symptoms of Begomovirus gossypikokranense include the upward or downward curling of leaf margins, vein thickening, and localized chlorosis. Infected plants typically exhibit reduced internode length, resulting in a stunted appearance. Furthermore, flowers and bolls are often deformed, leading to significant yield loss, both in terms of quantity and fiber quality.
The transmission of this virus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, primarily the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired by the whitefly during feeding on infected phloem sap. Once acquired, the virus circulates within the insect's body before being transmitted to healthy plants. This persistent transmission makes the control of the insect population the most critical factor in disease management.
