The pathogen primarily interferes with the plant’s genetic expression, causing significant physiological stress and disrupting developmental pathways, which leads to stunted growth and reduced crop productivity.
The primary hosts for this virus are plants within the Rubiaceae family, particularly the Hedyotis genus. Due to the broad host range of related begomoviruses, the disease can sometimes bridge the gap to other susceptible ornamental or vegetable crops grown in tropical or subtropical environments, acting as a reservoir for further transmission.
Symptoms of the infection typically include severe leaf curling, twisting, and puckering. Infected leaves often exhibit chlorosis (yellowing) or a mosaic pattern of light and dark green areas. As the disease progresses, the plant architecture becomes distorted, with shortening of internodes and reduced leaf size.
