Hemidesmus begomovirus (Begomovirus hemidesmi) is a plant-pathogenic virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome and is primarily known for causing significant physiological disruption in host plant tissues, leading to reduced agricultural productivity.

The host range of this virus includes various species, primarily within the Apocynaceae family, such as Hemidesmus indicus. Due to the high adaptability of the pathogen, it can occasionally infect other susceptible plant species found in tropical and subtropical regions where the insect vectors are prevalent.

The clinical manifestations of the infection include systemic mosaic patterns, chlorosis (yellowing of leaf tissue), leaf curling, and severe crinkling of foliage. Infected plants often show stunted development and a shortened internode length, which severely impacts the plant's overall architecture and reproductive capacity.

The transmission of this disease is highly dependent on whitefly populations, specifically Bemisia tabaci. These insects acquire the virus during feeding on phloem sap from infected plants and then act as persistent vectors, spreading the pathogen to healthy crops throughout the growing season.
