Description
Begomovirus jatrophaflavi is a plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is a single-stranded DNA virus that primarily infects the phloem tissues of plants. Unlike many other plant pathogens, this virus cannot be transmitted mechanically through pruning tools or contact; its survival and spread depend entirely on its insect vector, the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci).
The primary host for this virus is Jatropha curcas, a plant widely cultivated for its high seed oil content used in biodiesel production. The virus negatively impacts the health of the host throughout its vegetative growth. Research indicates that the virus can survive in alternative weed hosts within the Euphorbiaceae family, making weed management essential for disease control.
The clinical symptoms of the infection include severe yellow mosaic patterns on the foliage, accompanied by leaf curling, crinkling, and stunting. Affected plants exhibit inhibited physiological development, reduced branch formation, and chlorosis. As the disease progresses, the leaves often drop prematurely, significantly reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis and long-term vitality.
Development and spread of the virus are intrinsically linked to the population density of Bemisia tabaci. Warm, dry conditions facilitate the rapid proliferation and migration of the whitefly, leading to widespread infection within a plantation. Once a plant is infected, the virus becomes systemic, making it impossible to cure with chemical treatments, which is why preventive measures are the only effective strategy.
Management of Begomovirus jatrophaflavi focuses on preventing the introduction of the virus and controlling its vector. Key strategies include the deployment of yellow sticky traps to monitor whitefly populations, the use of insecticides during the early stages of vector infestation, and the removal and destruction of symptomatic plants. Crop rotation and maintaining a clean field environment by removing host weeds are also vital to minimize the risks of future outbreaks.
