Leonurus begomovirus (Begomovirus leonuri) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by their circular single-stranded DNA genome and are known for causing significant agricultural damage through systemic infection of host plants.
The primary host reservoirs are plants of the genus Leonurus, from which the virus can spread to neighboring vegetable and field crops. The ability of the virus to persist in wild plant hosts allows it to survive between seasons, acting as a perennial source of infection for new plantings in the vicinity of infected wild populations.
Symptoms of the infection typically include yellow mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf curling, vein yellowing, and severe stunting of the affected plants. These physiological changes disrupt the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis effectively, leading to reduced flower and fruit production and significantly lower overall crop yields.
Transmission occurs primarily through the feeding activities of whiteflies, such as Bemisia tabaci. These insect vectors acquire the virus from infected tissues and spread it across fields during their migration. Environmental factors like high temperatures and drought conditions exacerbate the problem by accelerating the life cycle of the vector and increasing their population density.
Management and prevention focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the removal of infected host weeds and the application of systemic insecticides to control whitefly populations. Farmers are also advised to use certified disease-free planting material and resistant crop varieties to mitigate the risk of infection and potential yield loss.
