The causal agent of this disease is a virus belonging to the genus Begomovirus. These viruses are characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome and are known for causing significant physiological disruptions in plants by hijacking the host's cellular machinery for replication.
The primary host plant for this pathogen is the Lisianthus (Eustoma). The virus typically infects plants in both greenhouse and field environments, often resulting in severe economic losses for commercial flower growers who depend on the aesthetic quality of their crops.
Key symptoms include significant leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis) in a mosaic pattern, and overall plant stunting. Infected plants often exhibit shortened internodes and deformed flowers, making them entirely unmarketable and incapable of normal growth cycles.
The development and spread of the virus are entirely dependent on the presence of the whitefly vector, specifically Bemisia tabaci. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plant sap and transmit it to healthy tissue during subsequent feeding sessions, facilitating rapid disease spread within confined spaces like greenhouses.
Management strategies focus on vector control as the primary method of prevention. Growers should implement a strict monitoring program for whitefly populations, utilize fine-mesh screens in greenhouses, and immediately rogue out any plants showing symptoms of the virus to prevent further transmission.
