Begomovirus ludwigiavietnamense is a plant-pathogenic virus belonging to the Begomovirus genus. This disease primarily affects plants of the Ludwigia genus. As a systemic viral infection, it significantly alters the physiological processes within the host, leading to reduced vigor and structural deformation.
The host range is primarily focused on species within the Onagraceae family, specifically Ludwigia vietnamensis. By disrupting the photosynthetic apparatus in the infected leaf tissues, the virus causes a gradual decline in the plant's overall metabolic efficiency, which eventually restricts development and biomass accumulation.
The primary clinical signs of the disease include distinct yellow mosaic patterns on the foliage, accompanied by irregular chlorosis. Growers often observe leaf curling, crinkling of the blade edges, and stunting. In severe cases, the infected plant may exhibit a significant reduction in the size and quality of both leaves and shoots.
Transmission occurs mainly through insect vectors, specifically whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci), which ingest the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmit it to healthy tissues. The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the population density of these insects, which thrive in warm, humid greenhouse environments or specific tropical outdoor climates.
