The Lycianthes leaf curl begomovirus (Begomovirus lycianthesis) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. As a DNA virus, it infects host plants systemically, primarily colonizing phloem tissues and causing substantial disruption to plant physiological functions.
The virus has a specific affinity for plants within the Solanaceae family. It predominantly affects crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and various ornamental species, while also utilizing numerous common weeds as alternative hosts to survive during periods when primary crops are not present.
