Description
Macroptilium yellow mosaic virus, classified under the genus Begomovirus, is a significant plant pathogen that primarily affects various legume crops. It relies on a single-stranded circular DNA genome to hijack host cell machinery, causing systemic infections that can devastate agricultural productivity in susceptible regions.
The host range of this virus includes species like Macroptilium lathyroides and several other related legume varieties. In addition to cultivated plants, several weed species serve as reservoirs for the virus, ensuring its survival during fallow periods and making eradication extremely difficult for farmers.
Symptomatology typically manifests as severe yellow mosaic patterns, leaf curling, and stunted plant development. As the infection progresses, affected plants show reduced internode length and poor pod formation, which drastically impacts both the quantity and the commercial quality of the harvest.
Transmission occurs exclusively through the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The virus is acquired by the whitefly during feeding and is then transmitted to healthy hosts. Because of the insect's high reproductive rate and mobility, the virus can spread throughout entire fields in a very short period of time under favorable climatic conditions.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on both the vector and the virus reservoir:
- Strict control of the whitefly population through targeted insecticide application.
- Removal of host weeds within and surrounding the fields.
- Use of virus-indexed, healthy planting material.
- Implementation of physical barriers like mesh screens or crop covers during early growth stages.
- Selection of resistant or tolerant crop varieties if available in the regional market.
