Begomovirus macroptilii is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It acts as a systemic agent that interferes with host plant metabolic processes. As a typical begomovirus, it relies on specific insect vectors for transmission and requires host plant tissues to replicate and spread throughout the vascular system of the crop.
The virus primarily affects plant species within the Fabaceae (legume) family. Both wild and cultivated varieties, particularly those within the genus Macroptilium, serve as susceptible hosts. The impact is significant in regions where these legume crops are grown intensively, as the virus can drastically reduce both vegetative biomass and seed production.
Symptoms of the infection are typically systemic and include chlorotic mosaic patterns, leaf curling, crinkling, and significant dwarfing of the plant canopy. Infected plants often exhibit reduced vigor and stunted growth. In severe cases, the development of pods is compromised, leading to malformed fruit and substantial quantitative yield losses.
The primary vector for the transmission of Begomovirus macroptilii is the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative, and non-propagative manner by these insects. Spread of the disease is highly correlated with the movement and population density of the whitefly, which thrives in warm and humid conditions.

Farmers are encouraged to employ integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the use of certified virus-free seeds and the implementation of reflective mulches to deter whiteflies. Removing weeds that act as alternate hosts and maintaining an optimal planting schedule can also significantly mitigate the risks associated with this viral disease.
