Description
Begomovirus macrotylomae is a plant viral pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It causes severe systemic disease characterized by mosaic patterns, chlorosis, and stunted growth. The virus particles infect the phloem, causing physiological disruption that prevents the plant from reaching its full developmental potential.
This virus primarily affects crops belonging to the Macrotyloma genus. Because of its narrow host range, it is often localized in specific geographic areas where its primary hosts are cultivated. However, it can occasionally persist in various weed species, which act as seasonal reservoirs for the infection when host crops are not present.
The most common symptoms include interveinal chlorosis, severe leaf curling, and overall plant stunting. Infected leaves often become leathery and crinkled, while flower production may be significantly reduced or aborted entirely. These symptoms result in poor pod set and substantially reduced seed quality, directly impacting agricultural yield.
The transmission of the virus occurs primarily through the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired by the insect during feeding and is then transmitted to healthy plants. Outbreaks are highly dependent on environmental conditions, with hot and dry weather favoring the rapid multiplication and migration of whitefly populations.

This includes the implementation of rigorous phytosanitary measures, the use of insecticides to suppress whitefly populations, and the deployment of resistant cultivars to minimize viral load in commercial fields.
