Description
Pathogen and disease type. The Malvastrum yellow mosaic virus (Begomovirus malvastrumvenae) is a viral pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is a serious threat to various plant species, characterized by a single-stranded DNA genome within a twinned capsid. This pathogen forces plant cells to replicate viral proteins, leading to systemic infection and severe physiological disturbances within the host plant.
Host crops. While its primary host is Malvastrum species, the virus has a significant impact on several agricultural crops. Plants in the Malvaceae family, including cotton and ornamental hibiscus, are particularly vulnerable. The wide range of potential hosts allows the virus to persist in agricultural environments throughout the growing season, especially in subtropical and tropical regions.
Symptoms and signs. Typical symptoms include mosaic patterns, yellowing of the veins, and chlorotic patches on leaves. In severe cases, infected plants show stunted growth, leaf curling, and overall deformation. These physical symptoms are the result of the virus disrupting the plant's nutrient transport system and photosynthesis, significantly lowering the overall health of the crop.
Development conditions and impact. The virus is primarily transmitted by the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the presence of this vector, which thrives in warm, dry weather conditions. Control and prevention measures. Since there is no chemical cure for viral infections in plants, management focuses on preventing the virus from entering the field and controlling the insect vectors:
