These viruses are characterized by their single-stranded DNA genome and are known to cause significant agricultural losses worldwide. The pathogen specifically targets the vascular tissue of its hosts, leading to systemic physiological disruption and stunted plant development.
The host range of this virus primarily includes members of the Malvaceae family, notably Malvastrum coromandelianum. However, due to the high adaptability of begomoviruses, they can occasionally impact related agricultural crops in the same vicinity. Once infected, the plant's metabolic pathways are diverted to support viral replication, which reduces the plant's ability to produce yield.
Clinical signs of infection typically appear as foliar mosaic patterns, yellowing (chlorosis), leaf curling, and severe stunting.
