Description
Cassava Cameroon begomovirus (Begomovirus manihotiscameroonense) is a viral pathogen that primarily targets cassava plants (Manihot esculenta). As a member of the Geminiviridae family, this virus is closely associated with the mosaic disease complex, which significantly hampers agricultural productivity in tropical regions, particularly in Central and West Africa.
The transmission of this virus is primarily biological, mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. When whiteflies feed on the phloem of infected cassava, they acquire the virus and subsequently transmit it to healthy plants. This mechanism of transmission allows the virus to spread rapidly across fields, especially during seasons when whitefly populations are high.
Symptoms of an infection are characterized by severe leaf mosaic, curling, and distortion. Infected plants typically display chlorosis (yellowing of leaf tissues), which severely limits the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Consequently, this leads to stunted growth, reduced canopy development, and an overall lack of vigor compared to healthy cassava stands.
