Begomovirus melochiae belongs to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a systemic viral disease that severely affects the plant's metabolic processes. The virus possesses a circular single-stranded DNA genome, leading to significant morphological disorders in susceptible host plants.
Host range
The primary host for this virus is Melochia corchorifolia. However, it can infect a variety of weeds and cultivated plants, particularly those within the Malvaceae family. These alternate hosts act as reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the ecosystem throughout the year.
Symptoms and signs
Infected plants typically exhibit severe leaf curling, distortion, and yellowing (chlorosis). Affected leaves may become stunted and brittle. The plants often show signs of overall dwarfism, with shortened internodes and inhibited apical growth, which drastically reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
Development and pathogenicity
The virus is primarily transmitted by the tobacco whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, in a persistent manner. The whitefly acquires the virus after feeding on an infected plant and remains a vector for the duration of its life. The virus causes major economic damage by reducing crop yields, quality, and sometimes leading to total crop failure.
Protection and prevention measures
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach focusing on controlling the whitefly vector using appropriate insecticides. Preventative measures include the removal of weed hosts that harbor the virus, maintaining spatial isolation from infected fields, and utilizing resistant cultivars.
