Begomovirus melochiaflavi

Description

Causal agent and disease type. Begomovirus melochiaflavi is a DNA virus within the Geminiviridae family. As a systemic plant pathogen, it causes viral diseases that interfere with the host's physiological processes. The infection typically leads to long-term impairment of plant development and reproduction.

Host plants. The virus primarily infects Melochia flavia, but it also has a significant impact on various broad-leaved crops. It is particularly dangerous in regions where specific weed species act as continuous reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to persist between growing seasons and infect new commercial plantings.

Symptoms and signs. Typical clinical presentations of the infection include intense yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), mosaic patterns, and severe leaf curling. The foliage often becomes brittle and malformed. In sensitive crops, the virus leads to stunting and significantly reduced yield, often rendering the harvest non-marketable due to poor fruit quality.

Development and spread. The primary vector for the transmission of this virus is the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Environmental conditions that promote high whitefly populations, such as prolonged warmth and lack of humidity, trigger rapid outbreaks. The disease spreads rapidly throughout a field as infected vectors migrate from plant to plant during feeding.

Control and prevention. Managing this virus requires aggressive pest control and rigorous field maintenance.
