Description

Begomovirus mirabilis is a plant viral pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by their circular, single-stranded DNA genomes and are known for causing significant economic losses in agriculture, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

The virus primarily affects ornamental species such as Mirabilis jalapa, but it has a broad host range among dicotyledonous plants. Because of its wide host diversity, it can persist in weeds and wild flora near cultivated fields, making it difficult to eradicate completely once introduced into a production area.

The characteristic symptoms of infection include systemic mosaic patterns, leaf curling, chlorosis, and stunting. Affected plants exhibit distorted growth, reduced leaf size, and significant changes in pigmentation, such as yellowing along the veins. In severe cases, the reproductive capacity of the plant is severely impaired.

Transmission occurs exclusively through insect vectors, specifically whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci). The virus is acquired by the vector during feeding and is transmitted to healthy plants in a persistent, circulative manner. Environmental factors, such as high temperatures and drought, promote the multiplication of whiteflies, thereby facilitating rapid virus spread.

Management strategies focus on vector control and preventative measures. Key tactics include the use of virus-free planting material, the application of systematic insecticides to reduce whitefly populations, and the removal of infected weeds around fields. Implementation of reflective mulches and greenhouse screening can also provide physical protection against the vector.
