Tobacco leaf curl virus is a significant viral pathogen within the Begomovirus genus that poses a major threat to commercial tobacco production. As a DNA-based virus, it relies on specific insect vectors to enter host tissues and initiate systemic infection within the plant vascular system.

The host range is primarily restricted to plants in the Solanaceae family, including various tobacco cultivars. These plants act as primary reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the field environment even when host crops are not actively growing, which complicates long-term management.

Symptoms are typically characterized by severe curling, crinkling, and upward rolling of the leaf margins. Infected plants often exhibit stunted development and yellowing of the veins, leading to a significant reduction in the quantity and quality of harvested tobacco leaves.

Transmission occurs exclusively through the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The insect acquires the virus while feeding on an infected plant and subsequently transmits it to a healthy one. Favorable climatic conditions, such as high temperatures and relative humidity, exacerbate the population growth of whiteflies, increasing the rate of spread.

Effective management strategies include:

  • controlling whitefly populations with systemic insecticides;
  • eradicating weed reservoirs around production fields;
  • implementing physical barriers or insect-proof netting for nurseries;
