The causative agent of this disease is Begomovirus nicotianavariati, a plant virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. The virus specifically targets the phloem of host plants, where it multiplies and interferes with the translocation of nutrients, leading to systemic infection.

The primary host for this pathogen is cultivated tobacco, but it also affects various wild species within the Solanaceae family. These wild relatives act as natural reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the environment even when main crops are not present. Young plants are particularly susceptible to early-stage infection, which can stunt their lifetime growth.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as distinct mosaic patterns on leaves, chlorotic spots, and varying degrees of leaf deformation.
