Begomovirus nicotianazimbabwense is a viral plant pathogen classified within the Begomovirus genus of the Geminiviridae family. The virus contains a circular single-stranded DNA genome. It causes a systemic disease that severely disrupts plant growth and development, leading to significant economic losses in the tobacco industry.
Affected crops
The primary host for this pathogen is tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). While it is highly specific to the Nicotiana genus, the virus can also reside in various wild weed species belonging to the Solanaceae family, which serve as overwintering reservoirs for the pathogen in agricultural environments.
Symptoms and signs
Typical symptoms include severe curling and crinkling of the apical leaves, accompanied by yellowing (chlorosis) and vein clearing. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth and shortened internodes, giving them a bushy appearance. The leaves often become leathery and brittle, making them unsuitable for commercial tobacco production.
Conditions for development and spread
The virus is exclusively transmitted by the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent, circulative manner. The disease spreads rapidly in warm and humid climates, which are optimal for the population explosion of the whitefly vector. Early-season infestation is particularly damaging as it leads to widespread disease throughout the plantation.
Harmfulness and preventive measures
The disease causes a drastic decline in both leaf yield and quality. Management strategies must be multi-faceted to be effective. Key approaches include the application of insecticides to suppress the whitefly population, maintaining field hygiene, and removing symptomatic plants immediately.
