Description
The causative agent of this disease is Begomovirus papayae, a member of the Geminiviridae family. This virus systemically infects the plant's vascular tissue, disrupting the translocation of nutrients and causing severe physiological abnormalities in the host plant.
The primary host for this pathogen is papaya (Carica papaya). In agricultural landscapes, the virus also affects various weed species that act as reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to persist in the environment between planting seasons.
Symptoms of the infection typically include severe curling, crinkling, and distortion of the leaves. Infected plants show chlorotic mosaic patterns, vein clearing, and significantly reduced internode lengths, which results in a stunted, stunted appearance of the plant.
The virus is transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the population dynamics of the vector. Hot and dry weather conditions accelerate the whitefly reproduction rate, leading to rapid disease transmission within the orchard.
