Bean chlorosis, caused by species within the Begomovirus genus, is a significant viral pathogen affecting bean crops globally. These viruses belong to the Geminiviridae family and are known for their ability to cause systemic infections that severely disrupt the development and photosynthetic capacity of host plants.
The primary host for this virus is the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). However, the host range can extend to various other legumes and wild weeds, which often act as reservoirs for the virus. The disease is particularly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions where the environmental conditions are suitable for its primary vector.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as intense yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves, which often progresses into mosaic patterns. Infected plants typically exhibit severe stunting, leaf curling, and twisted growth. Due to the systemic nature of the infection, the overall architecture of the plant is altered, resulting in a significant decrease in vigor and vegetative mass.
The transmission of the virus is entirely dependent on the whitefly, specifically Bemisia tabaci. This insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmits it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. The rate of spread is highly correlated with the population density of the vector, which spikes during dry and warm weather conditions.
The damage caused by phaseolichlorosis is significant, often leading to total crop failure in susceptible fields. Yield reduction occurs due to the failure of pod formation and poor seed filling. Control measures must focus on managing the whitefly population, utilizing resistant cultivars, and implementing strict hygiene practices to reduce the viral load in the agricultural environment.
