The causal agent of this disease is a virus belonging to the genus Begomovirus (family Geminiviridae). These viruses are characterized by small, twinned icosahedral particles containing single-stranded DNA. The infection is systemic and disrupts the physiological processes of the plant, leading to significant yield losses in affected fields.

The primary host for this pathogen is the common pea, but it has a broad host range among legumes. Alternative hosts often include various weed species that serve as reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the environment even when susceptible commercial crops are not present in the field.

Symptoms are highly diagnostic and include severe leaf curling, crinkling, and mosaic patterns. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and reduced flower production. In many cases, the yield potential is severely compromised as pods may be malformed or fail to develop entirely due to the systemic nature of the infection.

The transmission of the virus is primarily mediated by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The vector acquires the virus by feeding on infected phloem sap and transfers it to healthy plants. High temperatures and humidity levels favor the proliferation of whitefly populations, leading to rapid and widespread outbreaks of the disease within agricultural settings.

Effective management strategy requires an integrated approach. This includes the use of resistant crop varieties, the application of insecticides to control the whitefly vector, and the management of weed hosts near the fields. Preventive measures, such as adjusting planting dates to avoid peak vector activity, are essential for maintaining crop health and minimizing economic impact.
