Description
Begomovirus pouzolziae is a plant viral disease caused by a member of the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. The virus is a single-stranded DNA pathogen that invades the host plant's vascular tissues, systemically disrupting its vital biological functions and growth patterns.
The virus primarily affects plant species such as Pouzolzia zeylanica. However, due to the diversity of the Begomovirus group, it poses a recurring concern for various broadleaf crops and wild vegetation in tropical regions, where favorable climates allow for the year-round survival of both the host and the viral reservoir.
Clinical signs of the infection are characterized by severe leaf curling, stunted growth, and a distinct mosaic or yellowing pattern on the foliage. These physiological disturbances significantly impair the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor and diminished harvest quality.
The transmission of this virus is mainly mediated by insect vectors, specifically the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. These insects acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant sap and transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feedings. The rapid movement of these vectors ensures the quick spread of the disease within fields.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to control the whitefly population through the use of insecticides and reflective mulches. Preventing the disease also involves maintaining weed-free fields to eliminate potential reservoirs, monitoring local insect populations, and implementing strict phytosanitary measures to contain the spread.
