Pueraria begomovirus is a viral plant disease caused by pathogens belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by their small, geminate particles containing single-stranded DNA. The infection targets the plant's vascular system, disrupting the normal translocation of nutrients and leading to systemic symptoms throughout the entire organism.

The primary host for this virus is the kudzu vine (Pueraria montana), which often serves as a reservoir. However, the virus's ability to infect various legume species makes it a significant phytosanitary concern in agriculture. When the virus jumps to cultivated legumes, it can cause severe economic losses, particularly in regions where the kudzu vine is invasive and ubiquitous.

The disease is marked by distinct visual signs, including mosaic patterning, yellowing (chlorosis), and leaf curling or distortion. Infected plants exhibit stunted development, with reduced leaf size and shortened internodes. These symptoms effectively compromise the plant's photosynthetic capacity, resulting in lower biomass accumulation and reduced grain or fruit yield.

The transmission mechanism is strictly dependent on the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, which acts as the viral vector. The virus is acquired by the insect while feeding on the phloem of an infected host and can subsequently be transmitted to healthy plants. Environmental factors that favor the proliferation of whitefly populations, such as high temperatures and relative humidity, are directly correlated with higher infection rates.

Management strategies focus on breaking the disease cycle and controlling the insect vector. Farmers are advised to implement rigorous weed control programs to eliminate wild reservoirs of the virus. Additionally, the application of targeted insecticides to suppress whitefly populations is crucial. Integration of agricultural practices such as crop rotation and the use of virus-free planting material helps in mitigating the overall impact of Begomovirus puerariae.
