Description

Pathogen and disease type. The Begomovirus rhynchosiae is a member of the Geminiviridae family. It is a viral pathogen characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. The disease is systemic, primarily colonizing the phloem tissues of the host plant. This systemic colonization disrupts the vascular transport of nutrients, leading to physiological collapse and metabolic dysfunction within the plant.

Affected crops. This virus primarily impacts various species within the Rhynchosia genus, which are often found in wild habitats. However, under favorable ecological conditions, the virus can spill over into agricultural crops, particularly legumes such as beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and soybeans (Glycine max), posing a significant threat to legume production in tropical and subtropical regions.

Symptoms and signs of infection. The disease manifests through distinct phenotypic changes, including mosaic patterns on the foliage, chlorotic spots, and vein clearing. Severely infected plants exhibit leaf curling, crinkling, and stunted growth. The overall vigor of the plant is compromised, leading to a reduction in leaf surface area and abnormal fruit development, which significantly degrades the crop's market value.

Conditions for development and harmfulness. The transmission of this virus is strictly dependent on the whitefly vector, Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired by the vector during feeding and is then transmitted to healthy hosts. The spread is most rapid in warm, arid or semi-arid climates where the population of whiteflies is dense. The economic impact is high, as the virus can cause significant yield loss, reduced seed quality, and total crop failure in susceptible varieties.

Management and control measures. Since viral plant diseases cannot be cured with chemical sprays, management focuses on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies:

  • Implementing strict control of the whitefly population through appropriate insecticides.
  • Removing alternative weed hosts that serve as virus reservoirs near cultivated fields.
  • Using certified, virus-free seeds and planting resistant or tolerant plant varieties.
  • Applying spatial isolation and staggered planting to reduce disease spread between crop generations.
  • Monitoring fields for early symptoms to rogue out infected plants immediately.
