Description
The causative agent of the disease is a virus belonging to the Begomovirus genus. It is a systemic infection that colonizes the vascular system of the rose plant, disrupting vital physiological processes including photosynthesis and nutrient transport, leading to weakened plant growth.
The primary hosts of this virus are various species and cultivars of roses. It frequently occurs in both commercial nurseries and home gardens. The disease is particularly problematic in plants propagated through grafting, where the virus can be easily transmitted from rootstock to scion.
Typical symptoms include distinct chlorotic patterns on leaves, such as mosaic-like spots, yellow rings, or wavy lines. In severe cases, foliage may appear distorted, crinkled, or dwarfed. The overall vigor of the rose bush significantly declines, resulting in fewer flowers and increased vulnerability to other stressors.
The virus is primarily disseminated through vegetative propagation using infected materials or via insect vectors. Sucking insects, particularly whiteflies, play a significant role in transmitting the virus as they move between plants, acquiring and injecting virions while feeding on the phloem sap.
There are no chemical treatments available to cure a plant once it is infected with a virus. Consequently, disease management relies entirely on prevention. Strategies include using certified virus-free rootstocks, maintaining rigorous sanitation protocols for pruning equipment, and controlling insect vector populations to minimize the risk of secondary spread.
