Senecio begomovirus is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome and are primarily responsible for severe systemic diseases in various plants, particularly those in the Asteraceae family, such as Senecio species.
The transmission of this virus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, most notably the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired by the insect during feeding on infected plants and is subsequently transmitted to healthy plants. Understanding the life cycle of the whitefly is crucial for managing the spread of the virus within commercial crops and greenhouses.
